Did you know?

Chiswick was first recorded around 1000 years ago using the Old English word ‘Ceswican’ meaning ‘Cheese Farm’. It’s thought that the riverside area of Duke’s Meadows was the location of an annual cheese fair up until the 18th century.

Initially a small village, Chiswick grew up around St Nicholas Church from around 1181 on Church Street and the locals practiced farming, fishing and other riverside trades including a ferry which was vitally important since there were no bridges between London Bridge and Kingston throughout the Middle Ages. The area also included three other smallish settlements – The fishing village of Strand-on-the-Green, Little Sutton and Turnham Green on the road out of London.

A decisive battle took place on Turnham Green early in the English Civil War. In November of 1642, royalist forces under Prince Rupert who were marching from Oxford to recapture London, were stopped by a larger parliamentarian force under the Earl of Essex. This forced the royalists to retreat and they never again threatened the capital of London.
